Cardboard Chair Project
Western Michigan University 2018

The only constrictions for this project were: no fasteners, glue, or tape were allowed in the construction, and the final product must be made only out of cardboard provided or larger single ply sheets.

The project began with a speed challenge, to see which two person team could build a weight supporting chair in the course of an hour.

Following the initial dive into the project, was an in depth search of our declared theme, in this case it was the 1950's - 60's. From our research, a trend board for the theme had to be assembled.

Third in the process was working through all of the sketched ideations for the chair. From the sketches, 3 scale models were constructed and a final design was chosen.

To counter having to repeatedly trace the same shape. I used Auto-CAD to draw the largest component, that would later be printed and used as a template.

During tests, the chair supported itself, but did tend to lean to one side, most likely from me using it too much and reducing its structural rigidity.

If I were to fabricate the chair in a stronger material and alter the design slightly, I would construct a walnut and steel structure that had a hollow profile. For a cushion I would use an era embroidered fabric.
